Oil Painting: Reflections & Shadows

with Kari Ruiz

Thursday, July 16 from 5:00-7:00 PM EDT

Let's explore how you can find visual order in a complex scene by focusing on patterns created by light and shadow. This week, we'll be looking at how to capture a forest stream with its beautiful shadowy areas and sparkling reflections! Using the principle of notan, we will find the underlying design of the image which allows us to attack the painting with confidence! We will be painting in oil for this class.

Recommended Supplies:

  • Rigid painting panel, either 6x8", 9x12", or 12x16" with white surface (we will be toning it during class)
  • Oil colors: white, cool yellow (cadmium yellow light), warm yellow (cadmium yellow medium), cool red (quinacridone red), warm red (cadmium red scarlet), blue (ultramarine blue)
  • Mineral spirits
  • Paper towels
  • Brushes: an array of synthetic (soft) long and short flats
  • Paper (or sketchbook)
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Reference image printed out

About Kari Ganoung Ruiz

Kari Ganoung Ruiz was raised at the edge of The Finger Lakes National Forest in Central New York State, which set the stage for her deep connection to the natural landscape. After receiving her BS in Fine Art Painting from Ashland University in Ohio, Kari and her husband Photographer Diego Ruiz opened a picture framing studio and Gallery featuring their work. The thriving gallery space meant an increasing draw on their time, and a cut in available painting hours. At this time, Kari began to focus on plein air work; feeling the need to learn about light and shadow directly from the natural world. In 2014, the couple moved the gallery online in order to allow both of them to travel and move forward with their artistic careers. Kari and Diego now travel the US, capturing the landscape as they experience it. Awards include Best in show Finger Lakes Plein Air in New York 2017, First Place Quick Draw at Lighthouse Plein Air in Florida 2018, and Grand Prize Two Rivers Plein Air in Texas 2019. Kari's work is held in public and private collections across the United States and Canada, most recently added to the collection of the Bureau of Land Management in Colorado. Kari's work is represented by Gallery 46 in Lake Placid NY, Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery in Canandaigua NY, and Salmon Gallery In Trumansburg NY.
