Since its establishment in 2012, Malpaso has become one of the most sought-after Cuban dance companies with a growing international profile.
Emphasizing a collaborative process, the ensemble is an Associate Company of Joyce Theater Productions and led by Artistic Director Osnel Delgado. His duet Ocaso ("Sunset"), chronicles the evolution of a relationship following a cataclysmic event—while his 24 Hours and a Dog, performed in part to an original overture composed by Arturo O'Farrill, is inspired by "a day in the life" of 10 dancers in Havana. The program also features Aszure Barton's Indomitable Waltz, for eight dancers, an exploration of the soul under extreme emotional circumstances.
"As the theatre begins to vibrate with accumulated energy, you get the feeling that they could dance just about any genre with jaw-dropping style. Which makes their unique expression of Cuban culture in all its profound and complex glory all the more special."
