AARCH presents Vanish: Disappearing Icons of a Rural America

“Jim Westphalen’s visually stunning film, Vanish, is a eulogy for a rural way of life that is disappearing, but it also serves as a clarion call for all of us to preserve what’s left and what matters.” – Ben Doyle, President of the Preservation Trust of Vermont

Old homes, barns, churches, industrial sites, and other historic buildings dot the rural American landscape, the Adirondack region included. While we celebrate preservation success stories, many buildings remain endangered. Even in a state of disrepair, these sites evoke a range of emotions and offer onlookers both beauty and opportunity. Fine art photographer Jim Westphalen’s film, Vanish: Disappearing Icons of a Rural America, chronicles his work to document our country’s disappearing rural architecture. Join AARCH at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts for a special regional showing and Q&A session with the filmmaker. Westphalen’s evocative film showcases these structures front and center and highlights the people working to preserve their stories.
