Class Description

Rag weaving is a wonderful way to upcycle! This course will introduce the basics of weaving with discarded fabrics (“rags”). Participants will prepare one medium width warp which will be the platform for experimenting with weaving different rag materials. The result will be a table runner and/or bag.

This course is appropriate for beginning weavers who have some experience in warping a floor loom as well as advanced weavers. Warping thread will be provided as well as a selection of fabrics for weaving. Participants are encouraged to incorporate rags from their own fabric stashes.

Instruction will be on two successive Saturdays with an optional three hours of instructor studio support in between. Students are welcome to use the studio on their own and will have use of the LPCA looms for 3 weeks to complete their projects.

Cheryl Maid

Weaving Instructor

About the Instructor

Cheryl Maid adopted weaving as her primary creative outlet after retiring to the Adirondacks. She has explored a wide range of weaving techniques over the course of 15 years at the loom. Rag weaving is one of her favorites. As a daughter of Depression Era parents, she was instilled with a respect for stretching the usefulness of “old stuff.” Rag weaving keeps her stash of castoff shirts, neckties, curtains etc. in check and provides endless upcycling opportunities.
