An Evening with Iris Dement
Friday, May 2 • 8pm
Bluseed Studios is proud to present Iris Dement’s first-ever appearance in the North County! One of the most celebrated country-folk performers of her day, singer/songwriter Iris Dement was born in rural Paragould, AR, the youngest of 14 children. As a teenager, she was first exposed to country, folk, and R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell.
After a series of jobs waitressing and typing, Dement first began composing songs at the age of 25. Honing her skills at open-mic nights, in 1988 she moved to Nashville, and then made her recording debut in 1992. Her independent label offering, Infamous Angel, won almost universal acclaim thanks to her pure, evocative vocal style and spare, heartfelt songcraft. The record's word-of-mouth praise earned her a deal with Warner Brothers, which reissued Infamous Angel in 1993 as well as its follow-up, 1994's stunning My Life. Her third LP, 1996's eclectic The Way I Should, marked a dramatic change not only in its more rock-influenced sound, but a shift towards topics like sexual abuse, religion, government policy, and Vietnam. In 1999, she collaborated with country man John Prine on his album, In Spite of Ourselves. Dement recorded four duets with Prine that earned her a Grammy nod the following year.
“…one of the greatest artists of her generation. With her gift for poignant, confessional songwriting and a voice that makes raw beauty seem like a brand new thing, she invokes the elemental magic of the Carter Family while sounding as fresh and modern as John Prine.” ~ All Music Guide

Dar Williams
Friday, April 18 • 8pm
Williams has been engaging audiences with her musical artistry since the early 1990s when she rose
from the Northeast coffeehouse circuit to the national spotlight. A native of New York’s Hudson Valley,
where she still resides, Williams maintains in her life and music a strong system of values, idealism and
community involvement.
Williams has toured with artists such as Joan Baez, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin, etc.
Few performers create a bond from the stage with an
audience like Williams does. Because her songs succeed with storytelling–intimate, honest and whimsical travails
and triumphs– listeners lean forward to catch the details, which are copious and meaningful.
